Epidural Steroid Injections

In order to reduce inflammation and swelling in bulging or ruptured (herniated) discs, a patient may need an epidural steroid injection.. This outpatient procedure involves injecting cortisone, a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, into the epidural space, which is near the disc and spinal column.

In the actual procedure, the patient will be given a light sedative and a local anaesthetic to numb the skin, although most patients only need the anaesthetic. After the epidural space has been pinpointed, a needle is appropriately positioned and monitored. The patient’s blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen saturation and respiration are all monitored. Then, the steroid is injected into the epidural space, and the patient is held for half an hour before being discharged.
